AI Made Design Easy, and Revealed What People Thought It Was Worth

July 23, 2026

In under two years, AI design tools went from novelty to default. Logos, ads, decks, and brand kits now get generated in seconds, for free. What that reveals has less to do with how good the tools are and more to do with how quickly people dropped designers to use them. That speed tells us something uncomfortable about what buyers believed they were paying for all along.

AI Called Design's Bluff

If a business abandons professional design the moment a free tool can approximate it, that business was never buying design as strategy. It was buying decoration, and decoration has always been cheap. AI did not lower the value of design; it exposed how that value was already understood, as a cost to minimize rather than an advantage to invest in.

Output Was Never the Hard Part

AI is genuinely excellent at production. It can generate a hundred logos before a human finishes one. But production was never where design created value. The value was in judgment: knowing which of those hundred options is right, why it is right, and what it should say about the business. AI gives you infinite output and no opinion. Someone still has to decide, and deciding well is the entire game.

The Part AI Can't Touch

The parts that matter are taste, positioning, restraint, and knowing what not to make. A tool can render anything you describe, but it cannot tell you what your brand should stand for, who you are actually for, or which safe, obvious choice will make you invisible. Those are strategic decisions dressed up as visual ones, and they are exactly the decisions that separate a brand from a template.

The Uncomfortable Mirror

Consider a simple test: if AI can fully replace your design, it was probably commodity design to begin with. That is not an insult, since plenty of businesses genuinely only need "good enough," but it is clarifying. The design AI cannot replace is the design that was doing strategic work: building recognition, signaling trust, and making a business feel like the obvious choice. That work did not get cheaper; it got rarer.

Where the Value Actually Went

The same shift is happening everywhere AI touches: value moves from making things to deciding what is worth making. Design is not dying so much as splitting. The commodity layer collapses toward free, and the strategic layer becomes more valuable precisely because everyone else now looks generic. In a world where anyone can generate a decent logo, the businesses that stand out will be the ones who understood design was never about the logo.

AI made design easy. It also made it obvious who valued design as a differentiator and who only ever wanted it to fill a space. The pixels were always cheap; the judgment behind them never was.

At Catapult Startups, we help founders build brands and positioning that AI cannot commoditize, because in a market where everyone can produce, the advantage belongs to those who know what is worth producing.
